The largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhya NPP, was captured by Russian invaders after battles in Energodar on March 4.

The buildings of the ZPE were damaged by Russian shelling in several places, and the staff of the station were captured. Energoatom reported that the military of the Russian Federation had placed in the machine hall of the first power unit of Zaporizhzhya NPP at least 14 units of heavy military equipment with ammunition, weapons and explosives. On August 5, Russian shelling caused a fire at the NPP water station. In addition, due to damage to power lines, the 4th NPP power unit was disconnected from the power system and transferred to the reserve.

As a result of the shelling, on August 6, Russian shells got into the site near nuclear waste. Energoatom stated that the Russian soldiers carry out artillery shelling of Zaporizhzhya NPP, because they want to destroy its infrastructure and disconnect it from the power system of Ukraine to deactivate the South. Grossi's CEO of the International Atomic Energy Agency has urged the IAEA mission to allow the Zaporizhzhya NPP after her shelling by Russian troops.
