The Russian Federation is no longer a member of the European Convention on Human Rights in connection with its exclusion from the Council of Europe, as well as with its hostilities in the territory of Ukraine. From September 16, 2022, the Russian Federation has the status of a member of the European Convention on Human Rights. This was reported in her statement by the Council of Europe Secretary General Maria Peychinovich-Burich, the press service of the department reports.

"Russia's aggression against Ukraine continues to cause pain and suffering to millions of people in Ukraine and throughout Europe. We urge the Russian leadership once again to cease the war in Ukraine and the repression of their own people," Pychinovich-Burich said. At the same time, the Russian side has already responded to it.

In particular, the head of the Russian delegation in PACE Petro Tolstoy stated that it was NATO member states who, according to the Russian side, are responsible for the break of the dialogue between Moscow and the Council of Europe. According to Tolstoy, all this time, NATO's countries "used the topic of human rights to realize their own geopolitical interests and attacks.

" In addition, the diplomat stated that Russia refuses to pay the annual PACE membership contribution due to "unprecedented political and sanction pressure". Some time ago, Putin's Prescribe Dmitry Peskov said that Russia's withdrawal from the Council of Europe also means its withdrawal from all mechanisms of this organization, including the Convention on Human Rights.
