Away from the Russian Federation: Serbia agreed with Azerbaijan about new gas supplies

Fuel from Azerbaijan will come to the country by the Bulgaria-Serbia Pipeline, which is planned to be put into operation in the near future. Serbia, which does not support EU sanctions against Russia and continues to buy gas from the aggressor country, has agreed with Azerbaijan to increase natural gas supplies. The Azerbaijani fuel will come to the Republic of the Bulgaria-Serbia gas pipeline, which will work in the near future. The construction of the pipeline, by which Serbia is expected to reduce the dependence on Russian gas, began in February. Its length will be 170 km, of which 109 km will pass the territory of Serbia. It will be possible to pump about 1. 8 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

According to the Minister of Mining and Dubravka, Dubravka Khandanovich, the role of Serbia as a transit country will strengthen with the help of a new agreement. And in the future, she said, Belgrade will increase the volume of gas purchased in tank. It is noted that Serbia consumes 3. 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually, of which 2 billion cubic meters are exported. The republic wants to diversify the sources of supply to ensure its own energy safety.

"Azerbaijan is regarded by Europe as an alternative source of energy imports against the background of deep political differences with Moscow due to a full -scale invasion of Ukraine and a sharp reduction in Russian gas procurement," the publication reads. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan noted that Serbia has become an eighth European client of the country.

Earlier, Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Turkey and Hungary agreed on cooperation with the country in the energy sphere. Recall that the commercial supply of gas to Europe Azerbaijan began in 2020. According to the Agreement, the Azerbaijan transadriatic gas pipeline has undertaken to supply more than 10 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe annually to Europe.
