How much is Tomahawk: Can Ukraine buy a rocket if the US is not supplied - Defense Express

Tomahawk missiles with a distance of 1600 km of the United States are exported to other countries. In addition to the price, there is another obstacle: they are not supplied to all. The non -nuclear strategic restraint, enshrined in the President Vladimir Zelensky's "Victory Plan" provides for Tomahawk cruise missiles in Ukraine. About it writes Defense Express. At the same time, the Western media wrote that this idea in the United States did not find widespread support.

Washington does not supply these missiles in the form of help, but Tomahawk is still exported, and Japan has recently become their buyer. On January 18, 2024, the Japan Defense Ministry announced the signing of the US Agreement for the purchase of 400 Tomahawk missiles and 14 control systems. Of these, 200 units in the most modern version of Block V and others in the previous Block IV. Both are up to 1600 km, and they are intended for ships. The cost of the contract is $ 1. 7 billion.

One Tomahawk rocket cost $ 4. 25 million as part of a comprehensive agreement. Tokyo was able to get them at an acceptable price, the delivery time - until October 2027. Ukraine requires 1000 Tomahawk missiles (from 450 kg of battle weight) for non -nuclear strategic restraint of the Russian Federation, while it is necessary to spend $ 4. 25 billion. This amount should also be added to the Typhon ground launcher.

One such installation can run 4 rockets, 125 will provide up to two volleys of 500 missiles. But now Typhon is not exported, and its cost is difficult to estimate. The agreement also provides for the service of these missiles. However, in addition to the cost, there is another restraining factor. Tomahawk missiles are sold, but not for everyone, analysts say. For all of the existence since 1983, their only operator, except the United States, has been the United Kingdom.

In 2023, only two countries were granted purchasing permission - Japan and Australia. The desire to buy these missiles for any money has been declared in the Netherlands, but so far there is no permission. In other words, the situation with these weapons is somewhat more complicated, just paying for the price list is not enough. Therefore, one of the few alternatives is to develop your own long -range winged rocket, or participate in a joint project.
