NATO lessons: The Polish military told how the army of the Russian Federation changed during the war

After the war, says Colonel Maciej Korovay, Russia can review its mistakes in Ukraine and prepare the army for hostilities against a stronger enemy. After Ukraine's defense forces conducted an offensive operation in the Kursk region, the army of the Russian Federation came to some confusion. However, despite its initial confusion, the Russian command was able to stabilize the situation. Polish commander Maciej Korovay told about the tactical adaptation of the Russian army to combat conditions.

According to him, after the first weeks of panic, the Russians concentrated forces in the Kursk region to keep the territory without weakening other key areas, such as Donetsk and Zaporozhye. The Polish colonel stressed that Russian tactics are based on cascading operations, when efforts are concentrated consistently on different sections of the front. Such a strategy not only effectively distribute the forces, but also maintain the overall stability of the army.

However, as the expert noted, the real effectiveness of these actions will only show time. One of the key factors of success, according to Korovayev, was the preservation of the structure of the headquarters of the Russian army. Unlike the Ukrainian side, where experienced units were divided to form new parts, Russia was able to maintain the cohesion of staffs and use prepared reserves. Particular attention was paid to the rotation of commanders and officers.

The army of the Russian Federation prepared additional personnel through structures such as Bars (combat army system), which made it possible to minimize the effects of combat fatigue. This gives preference to the preparation of commanders and supportive staff, capable of adaptation to changing conditions. In addition, after the end of the war, Russia can review its mistakes and prepare the army for hostilities against a stronger enemy.

Korovay believes that the experience of the Russian-Ukrainian war should be used by NATO countries to improve their own training. Particular attention should be paid to the development of OPFOR units that analyze the tactics and strategy of potential opponents. Such units could study more deeply Russian tactics, the mentality of commanders and their approaches to combat.

"This is necessary in order to teach them how the enemy thinks, what he has tendencies, what sacrifices in tactical or operational actions he is ready to go, who commands this army, or experienced these commanders, or synchronized these Staffs . . . All this influences how the Russians fight, "the colonel emphasized. Earlier, the focus understood what purpose Russia was on the front to the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.
