The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is used in the battles of smoke machines TDM-2K: how to deal with them-the analysis of experts

To counteract the smoke curtains, the military can resort to SWIR technology. The devices operate in the wavelength range of 0. 9 to 1. 7 micrometer, which allows them to get clear images even in low visibility. Recently, Russian invaders on the front have become more actively used for the production of smoke curtains TDM-2K. These specialized military vehicles have a separate task - creating dense smoke curtains for masking infantry and combat tanks.

The tactical use of smoke curtains of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation analyzed the military observers of Bulgarian Military in its material of May 2. The authors of the publication drew attention to the video with the participation of the Russian military, who told in detail about the use of TDM-2K chimney. The video presents a tactical unit commander, which explains how his soldiers use machines to create a smoke curtain up to a thousand meters long.

According to him, such curtains increase the survival of troops, hiding them from hostile observers. TDM-2K operates using a mixture of diesel fuel and special flue-forming substances. The machine is equipped with nozzles and sprayers for even smoke spraying, creating a dense cloud for effective masking. It is built on the BTR-80 armored personnel carrier, which provides it with high mobility and the ability to move rapidly on the battlefield.

In addition, TDM-2K can scatter aerosols that interfere with infrared sensors, which makes it an important component for masking friendly forces. It is a universal tool in the arsenal of the Russian army. Meanwhile, such technologies have long been in service with a number of other countries. For example, in the United States, a M58 Wolf smoke machine is widespread, built on the M113 chassis.

In Europe, Rheinmetall, located in Germany, is known for its systems for the production of smoke curtains, such as LVPVS 66 and Maske. Experts say that combing smoke curtains remains a difficult task. Some military experts suggest using thermal imaging optical devices, but this approach is not always effective because of the presence of aerosols in smoke.

Therefore, in recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the technologies of the shortwave infrared spectrum (SWIR) that can penetrate through thick fog and smoke. SWIR technologies operate in the wavelength range of 0. 9 to 1. 7 micrometer, which allows them to receive clear images even in low visibility. Active SWIR systems emit their own light, which further increases their ability to penetrate through smoke and fog.

Despite the obvious advantages of SWIR technologies, the information that the Armed Forces of Ukraine received SWIR cameras from allies was not available in open sources. However, as military technology develops, such systems can play an increasingly significant role in observing the battlefield and counteracting smoke curtains. In general, the efficiency of use of smoke curtains, such as TDM-2K, depends on a specific tactical situation.
