Kusubov's act immediately became the object of attention of the media of the Russian Federation. Russian commentators recommend Yuri Kuzubov not to return to Ukraine. At the Grand Swiss tournament, the Ukrainian chess player Yuri Kuzubov shook Russian Vladislav Artemyev's hand. The appropriate moment is visible on video on the Fide Chess YouTube channel.

Before and after the end of the 7th round of the Grand Swiss tournament, which takes place on the island of Men, a 33-year-old chess player greeted a representative of the aggressor country with a handshake. It should be noted that the cousins played white figures and won. Russian athletes performed at this tournament under the flag of Fide (International Organization of Shahists), Kuzubov's act immediately became the object of attention to Russian mass communication.

The commentators expressed their support to the Ukrainian chess player and advised not to return to Ukraine. Yuri Kuzubov was born in Sichovka (administrative center of Sichov district of Smolensk region of Russia). From early childhood he lives in Kramatorsk. It is known that he was engaged in chess under the guidance of Sergey Polyantsev, Vladimir Savona and Alexander Alexikov. He was a member of the A. Momot Chess Club.

On May 27, 2023, Kuzubov was on the list of persons who did not return to Ukraine, violating the obligations to return to the territory of the country after graduation. We will remind, on July 29 the Federation of Chess of Ukraine (FSU) published recommendations for Ukrainians involved in international competitions. The Federation urged members of the national national team not to press their hands from rivals from Russia and Belarus, regardless of what flag they play.
