"Show responsibility": France asks the Russian Federation to refuse to place nuclear weapons in Belarus

The French Foreign Ministry believes that international regulations of weapons control were threatened by destabilization after the nuclear agreements of the Russian Federation with Belarus, and called on Russia to abandon this step. France is convinced that after Russia's violation of the SNO treaty and the termination of Russia's participation in it, the agreement with Belarus on the placement of nuclear weapons is a threat to further strategic stability in Europe.

This was reported by the French Foreign Ministry today, March 26. The department called on the Russian authorities to show responsibility that the nuclear state should bear. "France calls on Russia to show the responsibility that is expected from a nuclear weapons state and to withdraw from this destabilizing agreement (with Belarus on the placement of nuclear weapons - ed. )," - the message reads.

We will remind, on March 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that from April 3, Russia began the construction of a storage facility for nuclear weapons in Belarus. According to the head of the Kremlin, the work should end on July 1, 2023. We also wrote that the response of the event to Putin's statement about nuclear weapons was ambiguous.

In particular, the Pentagon stated that they did not see the signs that Moscow is preparing to use nuclear weapons, and the German Foreign Ministry accused Moscow of nuclear intimidation. The EU representative of the Josep Borrel Foreign Affairs reported that the European Union is ready to prepare a new package of sanctions and to impose restrictions if they continue to prepare the basis in Belarus to place tactical nuclear weapons of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
