The Great Ussuri Island - the river island is located at the fusion of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, in the immediate vicinity to the city of Khabarovsk. The island divided between China and the Russian Federation. Its area is about 350 km². It is located near the Chinese island of Yinlong (Tarabarov) and several dozen small islands. Between Russia and China, the dispute over control over the island has been in fact since 1860.

The border between the states was drawn along the Amur River, which did not belong to anyone, and the status of the islands was uncertain. In the 1920s and 1930s, the USSR troops were protected. Since 1964, the territory has been challenged by the PRC. In 2004, a treaty was ratified in 2005 regarding the transfer of China to the western part of the Great Ussuri (170 km² of 350), a total of Tarabarov and some small islands.

In October 2008, Russia transferred control over half of the Great Ussuri Island and Tarabarov Island on the Amur River. It should be reminded that at the end of July it became known that the relations of Moscow and Tokyo had deteriorated after the beginning of a full -scale invasion of Russia into the territory of Ukraine.
