Scientists are trying to modernize the warning systems about air threats using VR technologies as soon as possible. Northrop Grumman said it is actively using its own virtual reality systems to develop a new generation of satellites to warn about China or Russia, Breaking Defense reports. These satellites, called Nextgen Polar (NGP), will ensure a reliable detection of ballistic and hypersonic missiles over the Northern Hemisphere.

To create new satellites, the company uses innovative methods of projection and testing. For example, engineers with VR technologies can interact with three-dimensional satellite models in virtual reality, using glasses and gloves. They can also simulate satellite movements in space with the help of motion capture. This allows you to speed up the development process and improve the quality of the product.

NGP satellites are part of the Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR), aimed at modernizing the US missile attack system. Within this program, geostational orbit satellites will also be created, which will be paired with polar satellites. In total, five new OPIR satellites are planned to be launched by 2029.
