70 RBS rockets, Tridon guns and Giraffe radars combined into one air defense system and supply Ukraine - Forbes

Extend: Sweden produces some of the best nearby air defense systems. Among the novelties in the Armed Forces arsenal is the Tridon gun, in fact, the version of the iconic Swedish 40mm Bofors, which shoots 6 km and affects both armored vehicles and planes. RBS 70 rockets, Tridon guns and Giraffe radars of Swedish company SAAB work together as a single system. Three countries have just merged to supply this equipment to Ukraine. Forbes writes about it.

While the United States is blocking Ukraine, European allies of Kiev are trying to quickly fill in a vacuum in the security system. Sweden, Lithuania and perhaps neutral Ireland have promised Ukraine a powerful air defense system with mobile starting installations, guns and radars worth millions of dollars. Sweden will provide Tridon guns produced by SAAB, and Lithuania - SAAB RBS 70 starting installations. Ireland will transmit Giraffe radars, also SAAB produced in Sweden.

Radars exhibit targets for rockets and guns. RBS 70 is a CLP classic: a 54-kilogram launcher that shoots laser rockets and can affect aircraft, helicopters and drones up to 8 km away and at a height of 5 km. Three soldiers can carry RBS 70 in portable backpacks and install in a minute or two. Giraffe radar is designed for a four -person crew. Set on a truck or an ATV BV 206. The RBS 70 crew detection range is approximately 48 km.

The radar can transfer the coordinates of the missile calculation goals or cable connected to the starting unit. The starting unit gives its operator the visual signal of the target, as well as the sound signal: the tone that becomes louder when the target falls into the field of view of the increased optics of the operator. The operator presses the start button. The rocket flies into the air. The laser installed on the starting unit is activated.

The rocket is looking for a laser beam that is reflected from the target. "To hit the target, the gunner only needs to keep it at the Center of the Crossroads," - reports in the story of the popular Weapon Detective channel. Ukraine received its first RBS 70 and Giraffes from Sweden in the early 2023 and distributed them for the 47th and 93rd VMMR, and may also be received by other Ukrainian units. The Swedish military taught the operators of these systems in their country.

"You are also fighting for the safety of Europe," one instructor said to his trainee. Ukrainian brigades did not waste time, knocking down Russian drones and at least in one case the shock helicopter Ka-52 "Alliga" (in the NATO classification Hokum B). But the Tridon cannon is a novelty. In fact, the version of the iconic Swedish 40 mm Bofors. The Tridon truck is connected to the same control and control network as Giraffes and RBS 70.

As a bonus, the firing gun shoots 6 km and can affect both armored vehicles and planes. The Russians should expect additional losses in the air against the background of the arms of the Armed Forces of new air defense. Especially important, Sweden promises to continue supply. It is noteworthy that neutral, easily armed Ireland now supplies to Ukraine critically important equipment, along with other allies of Ukraine.
