The Armed Forces have Frankensam's armed systems: will they enter the US Air Defense
About it reports Army Recognition. It is noted that the proposal has become part of the Law on National Defense (NDAA) for the 2025 financial year. It determines the appropriation for military activity and emphasizes the need for a low range mobile air defense system, which can be quickly developed and deployed. The Frankensam initiative was launched to strengthen Ukraine's aircraft by integration of modern Western missiles with modernized Soviet starting installations and radars.
Three well-known systems have been created as part of the program: the Buk Starting Installations with SEA Sparrow missiles, this system solves the problem of lack of Soviet missiles 9m38 by equipping the Buk-M1 anti-aircraft systems with US RIM-7 SEA Sparrow missiles. The complex covers the Telar transportation and known as 9A310, with SEA Sparrow missiles.
Both 9M38 and RIM-7 missiles rely on a semi-active guidance to capture goals, which allows them to be used with the radar of the 9S35 Fire Dome, which is used in the complex. Soviet Sidewinder missiles, this system uses the AIM-9M Sidewinder missile adaptability, requiring minor modifications to integrate with Soviet radars.
The approach is based on the adaptability of the AIM-9m Sidewinder missile, which requires only minor modifications for integration, which can simplify the damage to the goals and increase the ability of air defense. Unlike RIM-7 SEA Sparrow, Sidewinder does not require radar of escort and backlight.
The components of the Patriot rocket with domestic radars are the most powerful and powerful and all systems combining the components of Patriot missiles with domestic radar systems of Ukraine, which are currently under test. According to experts, the integration of the Patriot starting installations with the Remote Interceptor Guidance-360 (RIG-360) and Ukrainian radars, such as RLS 80K6KS1 "Phoenix-1", can become a viable solution, especially in the face of the PATR.
Recognizing the potential of Frankensam, the Senate Committee instructed the US Secretary of Defense to take a briefing for Congress defense committees until March 31, 2025. The briefing will consider the use of Frankensam in emergency operations, the need for resources to expand the system and the possibility of use in other theaters.
