Silence in the air and at sea: Putin took the first step to a truce with Ukraine - The Economist

To spread: Vladimir Putin offered a truce in the air and sea before meeting with Donald Trump on August 15. Next, arrangements for freezing war in Ukraine are expected, but the true intentions of the Kremlin's head remain a big question. Russian President Vladimir Putin, before meeting with US President Donald Trump, offered a limited truce in the air and sea. This was reported by the sources of the British magazine The Economist.

It is likely that this follows a wider set of arrangements that determine the contours of freezing a full -scale war in Ukraine. However, the positions of Ukraine, Russia and America are still significantly different, and Putin's true intentions remain a big question. So far, the bombing of Ukrainian cities by Russian troops is ongoing.

Putin voiced the US proposal to meet with US President Special Representative Stephen Witcoff: the termination of hostilities if Ukraine goes to the administrative borders of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. This will allow him to declare a victory that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation could not reach three and a half years of persistent fighting. There may be restrictions on the number of armies of the two countries, but at a level close to the present.

Ukraine's membership in NATO will be excluded, but Kyiv will be able to freely seek access to the European Union. Meanwhile, the source close to the Ukrainian military leadership has stated that most commanders are waiting for at least a year of fighting. We will remind, some Western military analysts believe that if Ukraine gives way to territories, a bridgehead will appear in Russia for a new invasion.
