Ukraine introduced sanctions against 656 sea vessels of the Russian shadow fleet

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signed a decree on the implementation of the decision of the National Security Council on the application of sanctions against 656 sea vessels that are part of the shadow fleet. This is the largest sanctions package ever applied to Russia's shadow fleet.

According to the results of the monitoring of the Black, Red and Baltic seas, it was established that Russia used these vessels to circumvent the sanctions of the European Union, G7 and other states and in this way exported oil, oil products and liquefied gas. The owners and crews of the ships turned off the Automatic Identification System and used schemes that hide the ownership and origin of the cargo.

Sanctioned ships flew under the flags of more than 50 countries, most often - Gambia, Sierra Leone, Panama and Cameroon. Ukraine will transfer all relevant information to these states and work with them to stop issuing licenses. In addition, Ukraine will work with partners to synchronize these sanctions in their jurisdictions. At the same time, a significant number of vessels are already under the sanctions of the USA, Great Britain, the European Union, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
