Interior Minister Ali Yerlikai said the Turkish authorities managed to detain two probable attackers who shot a man on Sunday, January 28, during his service in the Italian Catholic Church of St. Mary in the Istanbul district of Sarier. In addition, he said, there is an assumption that the suspects are related to the "Islamic State".
Later, the minister, in front of the journalists, noted that in the framework of the investigation the attack, the police conducted raids in 30 places of Istanbul, detained 47 people. During one of the last raids, the suspects were caught. "Both suspects are foreign citizens. One of them is from Tajikistan, the other is Russian, and we appreciated their involvement in the Islamic state," Yerlika said. According to the publication, the Islamic state has taken responsibility for the attack.
IDIL representatives said it was a response to the call of the group leaders to attack Jews as well as Christians. Turkish President Recep Erdogan called the church priest to express his condolences and support. Pope Francis also responded to the incident and expressed solidarity with the parishioners of St. Mary Church during the Sunday service in the Vatican.
