A rare double explosion in the sun: plasma streams will be cut into the ground, a geomagnetic storm will be (photo)
Technology has appeared its Telegram channel. Subscribe not to miss the latest and most intrusive news from the world of science! Now scientists who observe the cosmic weather that shapes the activity of the sun, with the help of spacecraft, saw the appearance of a rare double coronal emission of mass. They were caused by a rare double eruption of solar magnetic threads on April 12 and 13. That is, two plasma streams were torn out of the sun, which is rare.
Coronal emissions of mass are plasma flows consisting of charged solar particles that can crash into the Earth's magnetic field and this provokes the appearance of a geomagnetic storm. If such a storm is strong enough, it can lead to malfunctions of power grids, communication systems and GPS. Also, this event often causes the appearance of a bright polar glow far beyond the polar region.
According to scientists, plasma flows are relatively slowly moving towards the Earth, and therefore it is expected that they will hit the magnetic field of our planet or on the evening of April 15, or on the morning of April 16. It is expected to lead to a G2 geomagnetic brown, which is considered not very strong. However, scientists predict that the inhabitants of the middle latitudes will be able to see the polar blue. This also applies to the northern part of Ukraine.
At the same time, scientists warn that it is very difficult to predict the appearance of a geomagnetic storm, as well as to predict all cosmic weather. Therefore, another geomagnetic storm can occur a day later. As focus wrote, scientists recently reported that they found another rare event that occurred in the sun. Our star threw out a huge amount of helium-3 into space. It is a rare helium isotope, which is much smaller in the solar system than helium-4.
