German experts noted that the establishment of dynamic protection on Leopard 2A4 will allow to offset the weak place of the machine, which is vulnerable to Russian cumulative shells of T-72 and T-90 tanks. Ukraine has received the main LEOPARD 2A4 combat tanks from its allies, equipped with a reactive armor (ERA) "Contact-1", which is installed around the tower and boards of the corps.

As reported on July 3 by Army Recognition, commenting on social networks, this new armor significantly reduces one of the known weaknesses of Leopard 2A4 - its booking. The observers write that they talked with the German military on the topic of the weak places of the LEOPARD 2A4 tank compared to the 2A6 version. According to them, an earlier version of the tank does not have a sufficiently effective armor to reflect the attacks of Russian T-72 tanks and new T-90 "breakthrough".

"Thanks to this protection, we significantly reduce one of these weaknesses. Indeed, equipped with the new ERA armor, upgraded Leopard 2A4 is now able to withstand the latest generation cumulative shells (HEAT), which Russian tanks shoot," German experts said. ERA "Contact-1" was developed in the 1980s in the USSR to strengthen the protection of armored vehicles from anti-tank shells and missiles. It consists of a number of rectangular metal plates attached to the outside of the machine.

Each plate contains a layer of explosive substance placed between two metal plates. When the cumulative charge is affected by the ERA, the explosive layer detonates, which causes a shock wave that quickly promotes metal plates forward. This counteraction destroys the jet of the cumulative charge, reducing its efficiency when the main armor of the machine is blown away. The key principle of ERA is that it neutralizes the incoming threat before it can punch the main armor of the machine.

The experts concluded that the establishment of "contact-1" protection on Leopard 2A4 will increase the vitality of the tank on the battlefield by destroying and reducing the efficiency of incoming threats.
