Decay before the war: as the Ukrainian airport disappeared from the map almost completely (photo, video)
In 1980, about 200,000 passengers passed through the airport. Just 20 years later, the situation changed dramatically when only 2000 people used its services in 1995. The main problem, in addition to the fall in the number of transportation, was the management of the airport. Even before the war in Ukraine in 2014, the airport actually lost its suitability for regular flights.
From time to time, loud recovery projects appeared: they tried to develop it as a passenger and a passenger hub, even discussing Turkish investments. However, the plans remained on paper. Subsequently, the prosecutor's office investigated the attempt to sell the building of a non -working airport for nothing. With the onset of the Great War, the resort has experienced new trials-in 2022 there were fighting, and in 2024 Russian troops struck it.
The airport building itself has remained unfinished since the Soviet era and often served as a place for extreme "excursions" and crash. After the closing of the Ukrainian airspace, journalists indicate, the leaders of this airport continue to receive their salaries. In particular, the director of KP "Sumy Airport" Konstantin Karpovich declared in two years 1 006 988 UAH: 536 682 UAH in 2022 and 470 306 UAH in 2023.
Currently, the project of recovery of the airport in Sumy is on Pavz for an indefinite period. It also remains unknown when and how the airport will be able to restore its work, as it was in the best of its times. Earlier, Focus talked about why airports could not be opened in Ukraine. Avayexpert Valery Romanenko points out that insurance companies will not give the necessary insurance for air transportation without complete closure of the Ukrainian sky from missiles and drones.
