Future BMP: How to deliver fighters to the front edge in the modern war - analysts

To spread: BMP was initially projected for protected infantry transportation and fire support, including tanks. However, modern threats emerging from FPV-oules require all-way protection, not just a powerful frontal and mine, as before. In the conditions of dominance of drones on the battlefield, in military circles they actively discuss not only the future tanks, but also the fate of infantry fighting vehicles (BMP).

The German edition of Soldat und Technik has tried to answer this question by analyzing the combat experience of Ukraine and Russia, the Cold War's heritage and modern technical trends. As a possible response, the Israeli Namer - a heavy armored personnel carrier based on the Merkava Mark IV tank. This machine has a powerful armor and is equipped with active Trophy protection, which in 2024 was able to hit UAVs.

However, this armored vehicle has weak zones that are easily detected by drone operators, and limited mobility makes it unusable for maneuverable war. In addition, according to analysts, any complex of active protection (Kaz) has a limited ammunition and is not always ready for attack before the movement of equipment.

At the same time, the attempts of Russian troops to use heavy "Sarah tanks" as Ersatz-BMP, as shown by the experience of war in Ukraine, lead to a rapid defeat of the technique of massive drones. At the other end of the problem is an approach, which implies the complete absence of armor, where the survival of personnel is achieved at the expense of speed and maneuverability. Soldat und Technik recalls Ukrainian practice in 2022, when the PTRC calculations moved on electric motocycles.

Today, Russian units are actively using a similar concept, using buggy and motorcycles in Banzai-Atachers. However, this technique is vulnerable to bullets, fragments and drones, especially with machine vision, which offset the effect of suddenness and speed. Analysts also pay attention to the experience of the Bundesver of the End of the Cold War, when each tank company was accompanied by the Gepard Anti -aircraft SAU.

But such protection stops acting with the exhaustion of the ammunition or the destruction of a single SCR. Therefore, the option of integration of antiprodrouse solutions directly into each BMP is considered to be more promising - in the form of complexes of HRs and anti -aircraft turlies. An example is the ARX 30 KNDS module, which is designed for new Western armored vehicles. Meanwhile, the most efficiency, experts believe, can provide the concept of an automated machine.

Such a platform, equipped with sensors, IEPs and means of destruction of drones, can control the protective systems of several BMPs or tanks at once, forming a kind of distributed network. Additionally, it is proposed to combine heavy and light platforms, including land drones, to increase mobility and distribution of sensors on the front. Such a system should also be supplemented with its own UAVs for air cover and interception of enemy drones.
