Fourth winter during the war: what will happen to heating and what to prepare for Ukrainians

To spread: the Ministry of Energy was told about preparation for the heating season. And reported that in Ukraine the accumulation of strategic reserves of natural gas, fuel and coal for stable operation of thermal power plants (TPPs) and thermal power plants (CHP) in winter continues in Ukraine. The volume of gas pumping increases, assured the Ministry of Energy, so in winter Ukraine will be fully provided with the required amount.

The First Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Yuriy Sheiko reported this during a meeting of the staff for the preparation of housing and communal services and the fuel and energy complex for the autumn-winter period of 2025–2026. But Sheiko confessed that due to Russian attacks on the objects of production and storage of gas, the situation in the industry remains difficult but controlled.

"We must be ready for any course of events to ensure that citizens and businesses are provided with gas for a stable winter. In view of this, the pace of pumping natural gas to underground storage facilities increases and correspond to the preparation schedule for the heating season of 2025-2026," Sheiko stressed. He also noted that the necessary coal reserves have already been accumulated, and their replenishment continues in accordance with the plan.

"During the fourth winter, in the conditions of a full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the country will be provided with sufficient amount of coal and gas," the Ministry of Energy reported. As of the beginning of June 2025, gas reserves in Ukrainian underground storage remained the lowest in the last 11 years, but the lag in last year is gradually declining. In April and May, the only natural gas importer is NAK Naftogaz of Ukraine.

In May, the company intends to import more than 400 million cubic meters of natural gas from Hungary and Poland. Prior to the strengthening of Russian air attacks on gas infrastructure, Ukraine produced 52-53 million cubic meters of gas per day, but Russian attacks reduced production. Although some of the production was restored, its volume is kept secret. By mid -October, Ukraine needs to have at least 13 billion cubic meters of gas for the uninterrupted passing of the winter season.

We will remind, Focus was quoted by the Minister of Energy Herman Galushchenko, who reported that the Russians had restored strokes on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine. The minister called the situation difficult and noted that Ukraine is buying gas for electricity production. The temporary acting chairman of the board of NEC "Ukrenergo" Alexei Brecht reported on June 11 that the situation in the power system is "absolutely controlled and normal".
