Russia will be unpleasant: as the Baltic countries decided to harm the Russian power system

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuanian electricity transmission systems will be connected to the continental European network of the previously planned term. In 2025, they want to disconnect from the Russian power grid. The Baltic countries, against the background of a full -scale invasion of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation into Ukraine and fears for their energy security, decided to accelerate the process of scattering their power grids with Russia.

According to ESR ESTonia TV and Radio Language Company, four countries were signed by the European Commission (EC): Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. It is noted that the disconnection of the Baltic States from Russian countries can take place almost a year earlier than planned. Earlier it was expected that the disconnection would take place at the end of 2025. But the new term is already agreed - February 2025.

"Estonia will disconnect from the Russian electrical system almost a year earlier than it was planned earlier," said Estonia Prime Minister Kai Callas. According to her, the Baltic countries no longer want to depend on Russian energy. She says staying on the Russian power grid is a risk for Estonian consumers. The Baltic States will be expected to control their own electricity networks after the scattering of the country.

The disconnection date depends on the speed of laid Harmony Link between Poland and Lithuania. At first they wanted to lay it with a seaside, but in the end it will be released parallel to the railway rail Baltic. "In fact, it will be laid by the Rail Baltic corridor, which is much safer, economical and technically faster," explained Estonia Climate Minister Kristen Michal.

Also, the Baltic countries will jointly leave the Brell contract, which was concluded with Russian and Belarusian operators, in the summer of 2024, half a year before synchronization. By the way, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the last three EU countries that are still synchronized with the Russian electricity. Prior to the start of a full -scale invasion, the Ukrainian power system was annexed to Russia and Belarus.

However, at midnight on February 24, Ukraine has removed from these power systems. Already on March 16 last year, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the association with the EU energy system. This allowed Ukraine, in particular, to be energy independent. And on November 28, 2023 it became known that the Ukrainian power system was completely synchronized with the European energy network and was able to import large volumes of electricity.
