Invisible Marine Hunters: NATO responds to the threats of the SG-1 Fathom underwater drones (video)

To spread: the growing activity of Russian submarines has provoked a serious reaction from NATO countries. The German defensive startup Helsing has introduced an autonomous submarine SG-1 Fathom and Lura SG-1 Fathom, which, according to developers, are able to radically change the approach to maritime defense. Helsing designers have presented two new advanced developments aimed at transformation of underwater defense, reports The Financial Times.

SG-1 Fathom is a miniature autonomous apparatus of 195 cm long and a weighing of 60 kg, which has no traditional engine and moves with sea currents at a speed of 1-2 units. Thanks to this design, it is almost imperceptible in the underwater environment. The device is capable of operating at a depth for three months without operator intervention.

The main feature of SG-1 is the integration with the Lura artificial intelligence, which allows to analyze 10 times 10 times more quiet sound signatures than even experienced acoustic. When the target is detected, the apparatus floats and transmits a signal through the satellite antenna Satcom. Moreover, one operator will be able to control hundreds of such devices. The Helsing decision has already aroused the interest of the military.

The British Navy confirmed the start of the SG-1 Fathom deployment to identify Russian submarine in strategic regions-from the Baltic and the North Sea to the Indo-Pacific. Planers will be used by swarms, which will increase the coverage density and increase NATO forces. It is noteworthy that SG-1 was originally designed to monitor marine mammals and monitor oceanic conditions. However, with the rise in the threat of underwater activity of Russia, the accents have shifted.

According to Helsing Maritime, Amelia Guld, Lura and SG-1 Fathom, a dynamic system that learns in real time, which can be described as an example of maritime defense of the XXI century. It should be noted that the company has already started cooperation with Ukraine. In 2023, a memorandum of cooperation between Helsing GmbH and the Ukrainian Ministry of Strategic Industry was signed, which involves the integration of the AI into Ukrainian drones and surveillance systems.
