Lieutenant Colonel of the Russian Army Dmitry Lisitsky, who participated in the battles for Ilovaysk, allegedly committed suicide not in the area of ​​hostilities. Dmitry Lysytsky commanded the first landing battalion of the 247th special Cossack landing regiment. He participated in Russia's invaders in Abkhazia and Chechnya. In the 1990s he was in Yugoslavia, where the war lasted. In 2014 he participated in the organization of the environment of Ukrainian troops near Ilovaysk. In 2015 he received the title of Hero of Russia from the Kremlin. In the Ukrainian media, information on the elimination of the Russian military soldiers of the Armed Forces was spread.

The murder of Lisitsky was called revenge for the tragedy in Ilovaysk in 2014, in which Ukrainian servicemen were killed. The fighting with Ilovaysk lasted in August 2014. Units, the main volunteers, came to the city. Ukrainians were able to control the main part of the settlement. They were surrounded by the considerable forces of regular Russian troops after the event of August 23-24 to the rear of the Ukrainian group from the territory of the Russian Federation.

By prior arrangement, on the morning of August 29, Ukrainian units had to organize columns to leave the city. Initially, they moved by Russian fortified positions, but after a while the Russian troops opened fire, shot by the columns on the march. As a result of the attacks of Russian invaders, 366 Ukrainian fighters were killed, about 450 were injured, 300 were captured.

Representatives of the Provisional Investigation Commission on the Investigation of the Ilovay tragedy evaluated the loss of Ukrainian troops in about a thousand people. The Office of the Prosecutor General stated that the only factor that led to the tragic events near Ilovaysk is military aggression by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
