Ukrainians support nuclear weapons recovery but there are fears - a survey (infographics)

According to the KIIS survey, the maintenance of nuclear status restoration has increased significantly over the last three decades. However, the opinions of citizens depend significantly on the context: the economic stability of the country and the reaction of the international community. For the most part, Ukrainians support the idea of ​​restoration of nuclear weapons, from which the country refused in 1994 as part of the Budapest Memorandum.

However, the level of support varies depending on the possible consequences, such as the loss of support of Western countries or the imposition of sanctions. This is stated in a survey of the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS).

According to the survey, the overall attitude of Ukrainians to the restoration of nuclear potential is as follows: for comparison, in 1994, when Ukraine refused nuclear weapons, the situation looked different: in KIIS notes that at that time the issue of nuclear weapons was not included in the number of major problems for Citizens. Only 5% of Ukrainians considered this topic a priority against the background of economic and social difficulties.

"The social sentiment of the 1990s (except for some naivety and inexperience) is actually important to characterize as peaceful and responsible. Ukrainians demonstrated their desire to live and develop in a safe peaceful world and were ready for responsible actions, in particular, in nuclear weapons.
