16 years in the strict regime colony: the Russian Court sentenced the judgment to the journalist WSJ Gershkovich (video)

The Kremlin accused of espionage of the journalist The Wall Street Journal, who in the spring of 2023 was in the Russian province not far from the MIC plant. The man could be exchanged for a Russian killer sitting in Germany, but the court decided otherwise. On July 19, the Sverdlovsky Regional Court made a sentence in the case of an American citizen and journalist of The Wall Street Journal Evan Gershkovich. The Americans were sentenced to 16 years in prison on espionage charges.

The sentence of the Russian court was written in the Telegram-channel of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation. The post of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation stated that Hershkovich was found guilty of Art. 276 of the Russian Criminal Code - for espionage. The court announced a verdict according to which the American will hold 16 years in a strict regime colony. The Russian prosecutor's office posted a fragment of the sentence.

You can see a judge who reads the text of the decision quickly. Before him is a security guard in a protective mask and heard the cameras of journalists who were admitted to the Hall of the Sverdlovsky Regional Court. The site of the WSJ, for which Gershkovich worked, commented on the events in the Russian Federation. Publisher and editor -in -chief Emma Taer said that there was a "fictitious conviction" and the employee of the publication illegally spent 478 days in the Russian prison.

At the same time he was deprived of contact with his relatives and colleagues and did not provide the proper means for protection. "All this is because he did his journalist's work," the WSJ portal. Evan Gershkovich is a 32-year-old American journalist who was detained in the Sverdlovsk region in March 2023. The journalist stated that he performed the editorial task and investigated the activities of the Wagner PEC, which participated in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Instead, the Russian authorities accused him of espionage. According to Russian law enforcement officers, the man seemed to be interested in the work of "Uralvagonzavod", which belongs to the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation and works for the Russian army. Protest against Gershkovich's detention was expressed by American officials. For example, US President Joe Biden assured that Russia would "penalize" for such behavior.

The trial of Gershkovich began on June 23, 2024, Focus wrote. The man appeared in the courtroom with the head shaved. In response to all prosecution, he stated that he had simply performed his journalistic work and rejected suspicion of espionage. In February 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned Gershkovich in an interview with journalist Tacara Carlson.

Then it was suggested that the journalist and other Kremlin prisoners can exchange for spies and killer Vadim Krasikov, who was sitting in Germany. Subsequently, Germany abandoned this idea, as the oppositionist Alexei Navalny was killed in the Polar Colony of the Russian Federation. We remind that on July 19, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about whether war with the Russian Federation could end in 2024.
