US Navy will receive a Trident II D5 nuclear missile: what is known about weapons

D5le2 ballistic missile will receive updating of guidance systems and motor installations. At the same time, modernization will maintain the high accuracy and efficiency of the system in the conditions of changing threats. The US Navy has concluded a contract with the Lockheed Martin Corporation worth $ 383 million to develop a modernized version of the Trident II nuclear ballistic missile, which will receive Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5le2).

The purpose of the program is to maintain the combat capability of strategic restraint forces deployed on board submarines until 2084. Army Recognition reported this on February 3. Trident II D5 is the basis of a strategic deterrent system for the US and the United Kingdom. These rockets are placed on American submarines of the Ohio class and British submarines of the Vanguard class.

The rocket is equipped with a three -stage solid fuel motor, which provides rapid acceleration and ability to evade the interception. Trident II can carry several self -guarantee warheads (MIRV), with a flight range of more than 12,000 km, which makes it an important element of global nuclear safety. The D5le2 modernization project includes updating of guidance systems and motor installations.

Improvement is expected to preserve the high accuracy and efficiency of the system in the conditions of changing threats. It is noteworthy that Trident II was regarded as a potential weapon for Prompt Global Strike, which provided missiles to strike high -nuclear strokes. However, the idea has caused an international debate due to the risk of erroneous interpretation of launching as a nuclear attack.
