The largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhya NPP, was captured by Russian invaders after battles in Energodar on March 4. The buildings of the ZPE were damaged by Russian shelling in several places, and the staff of the station were captured. The Kremlin uses the Zaporozhye NPP to cover its military equipment because the Armed Forces cannot open fire in the area of the power plant, as well as for pressure on Ukraine and the world, threatening a nuclear disaster.

Russian troops have equipped fire positions for the ZPP and fired from there Ukrainian cities. Energoatom reported that the military of the Russian Federation had placed in the machine hall of the first power unit of Zaporizhzhya NPP at least 14 units of heavy military equipment with ammunition, weapons and explosives. On August 22, the invaders brought additional APCs and special cargoes to the station repair area.

In total, more than 40 units of military equipment of Russians have been stationed in the station. In recent weeks, the invaders have repeatedly arranged provocations with shelling. Energoatom reported that Russia is preparing to disconnect the Zaporizhzhya NPP from the power system of Ukraine in the near future.

On August 16, the head of the Zaporizhzhya Ova Alexander Starukh called on the inhabitants of the temporarily captured energy to evacuate through the shelling of Russia of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. He stated that in the event of an accident, about 400,000 people from two regions would have to be evacuated. Ukraine calls for the IAEA and the UN as soon as possible to send an international mission to the Zaporozhye NPP.
