Sudanese rebels shot down the Il-76 plane: the entire Russian crew died, media (video)

Share: The Sudanese Rapid Response Force shot down an Il-76 military transport plane near the city of Babanusa. Captain of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Ilya Tumanov said that the dead were Russians. "The UAE-backed RSF in Sudan shot down a Sudan Air Force Il-76 military transport plane over Babanusa, West Kordofan, killing all on board," Clash Report reported on November 5. It is noted that the wreckage indicates the use of a Chinese-made FK-2000 missile supplied to the UAE.

The Defense Blog clarified that the attack took place on November 4. An internal conflict has been going on in Sudan for over a year now, with fighting between the rebels of the Rapid Reaction Force and the government army. The IL-76 is used by Sudanese aviation to transport troops, equipment and supplies between bases. It is not known whether Sudan used air defense systems. Also, RSF did not reveal details about the method of defeat.

It is noted that the city of Babanusa is located on a key transport corridor, and control over transport routes is one of the main factors in the conflict. "The destruction of such an aircraft, if confirmed, would mean the loss of a strategic asset for the Sudanese Air Force, as the fleet of large transport aircraft is limited and difficult to replace in the current environment," the analysts emphasized.

Tumanov stated in his Fighterbomber Telegram channel that there were Russians on board the downed plane. "The crew is Russian, civilian. The plane was bought in Kyrgyzstan a month and a half ago for 12 million dollars. The crew worked under a contract," he said. The Russian officer added that there is no official information about the fate of the crew. We will remind, on October 31, Focus released a material about what is currently happening in Sudan.
