North Stream-2 is a pipeline from Russia to Europe 1234 km long, bypassing the gas transmission system of Ukraine at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. The project was started in 2018 after the invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukrainian Crimea and Donetsk and Luhansk regions. In 2021, the construction of the gas pipeline was completed, but the German regulator did not certify it against the backdrop of reports on the recovery of Russian troops to the Ukrainian borders.
Two days before the start of the full -scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Germany stopped the certification of the project. On March 1, the gas pipeline filed a bankruptcy application. According to US President Joe Baiden, the US and Germany are working to ensure that the Nord Stream-2 is not launched. Meanwhile, gas prices in Europe have increased more than twice since the beginning of the year as Russia has reduced supplies.
