Awaiting Diversion of the Russian Federation: NATO launches the submarine infrastructure protection center

There is a high risk that Russia can target underwater cables and other critical infrastructure, trying to break life in the West. The North Atlantic Alliance will put into operation a new center, which will be protected by submarine pipelines and cables. This decision is made in the light of an unknown attack on the northern streams and fears about the possibility of cyberattack from Russia. About it reports AP.

"The threat is developing," said Lieutenant General Hans-Virmann, who heads a special unit that deals with this problem after the NATO defense ministers have given green light to establishing a new center. The new NATO Center for the Protection of Underwater Pipelines and Cables will be located in Northwood, located in the northwest of London. "Russian ships have actively applied our critically important submarine infrastructure.

There is a high risk that Russia can target underwater cables and other critical infrastructure, trying to break life in the West," Virmann told NATO's headquarters. About 8,000 kilometers of oil and gas pipelines are extended across the North Sea, which emphasizes the importance of safety and protection of this area.

At the same time, it should be noted that underwater cables and networks cannot be observed around the clock, which creates potential vulnerability for possible attacks and sabotage. Every year, about 100 incidents associated with submarine cable damage are recorded worldwide. It is often difficult to determine whether these incidents were deliberate or accidental.

It should be reminded that it became known that official Warsaw is looking for support from Germany to impose EU sanctions on the Polish-German area of Druzhba oil pipeline. This is to ensure that Poland could refuse to buy Russian oil next year, in 2023, two sources familiar with negotiations reported without payment of fines.
