For the first time in history: German fighters intercepted Russian planes near Latvia

German aviation flew from the Lielvarend Latvian Military Base for intercepting Russian aircraft near Latvia territorial waters. For the first time in history, Eurofighter fighters from Germany have been intercepting Russian aircraft near Latvia for the first time in history. This was reported by the Latvian Air Force on Facebook. On Friday, March 1, German fighter jets departing from the Lielvarend Latvian military base were intercepted by Russian aircraft near Latvia territorial waters.

It is noted that for the first time German Eurofighter fighter jets departed from the Latvian military base to fulfill a similar mission. Latvia's Defense Minister, Andris Prauds, expressed his reaction to the incident. "NATO aircraft patrols are working completely and the Allies can respond immediately. Today, German Eurofighter fighter jets have gone from the air base for the first time to intercept two Russian military aircraft near Latvia territorial waters," he wrote on Twitter.

Recall that the French fighters of Miraage 2000-5 on Thursday, February 29, were intercepted over the Baltic Sea by two Russian Su-30M, and then An-72. In 2024, it became known about a number of bilateral security agreements concluded with the countries of the European Union and NATO: with the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Denmark and others.
