The presence in court is not required: in Latvia suggested to hold a correspondence tribunal over Putin

According to the President of Lithuania Egils Levis, holding the tribunal will legally confiscate Russian assets that can be aimed at restoring Ukraine. The Russian military invasion of Ukraine should be considered by a special tribunal, regardless of whether the Russian President Vladimir Putin and other political and military leaders will be present on the defendants. According to Latvia President Egils Levitz, the tribunal can take place in absentia.

The politician said this in an interview with Bloomberg TV. According to the Latvian leader, the tribunal is needed to guarantee the security of the international system and confiscate the assets needed to restore Ukraine. Levitus noted that Russian military aggression against Ukraine is the greatest violation of international law since the Second World War. "Russia's invasion of Russia is the most gross violation of international law since 1945.

One of its consequences is the arrest of Russian assets abroad," the Latvian President said. Commenting on the words of Levis, journalists recalled that Western countries froze the assets of the Central Bank of Russia after the February invasion of Ukraine. And the special tribunal would allow to arrest and transfer these assets as assistance in the restoration of Ukraine.

In addition, the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - insist on the creation of the International Tribunal, as it will allow the Russian political and military leaders to be held accountable, as it will eliminate legal loopholes because other courts do not have sufficient powers and competences.

Earlier it was reported that the Netherlands Parliament supported the creation of a special international tribunal in the Hague for the Russian military and political leaders for the act of aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. This decision is due to the fact that, in the opinion of the deputy of the Serrd Sordsm, it is important for the international community that President Putin, who has solved the war in Ukraine, does not remain unpunished.
