Kyiv residents may be left without a subway for 2-3 days: the engineer told what the threat of increased shelling of the Russian Federation is

Share: If the Russians increase their shelling of Kyiv or power plants in Ukraine in general, in the worst case scenario, the subway in Kyiv will stop working for 2-3 days. Metropolitan trolleybuses and trams may also come to a complete stop. Vyacheslav Skryl, an energy engineer and co-founder of the "Passengers of Kyiv" NGO, told about the possibility of stopping the Kyiv metro in an interview with TSN, published on November 16.

According to him, a short-term stop for 2-3 days is the most critical consequences for the subway that he can imagine. "This can happen if the Russians fire too hard on Kyiv, or on power plants in Ukraine in general. And in addition to local damage to the networks, there will be a high shortage of electricity. Then a stoppage of the metro is possible," said the energy engineer.

At the same time, Skryl noted that after the restoration of networks and an increase in the level of generation, the operation of the metro will be immediately resumed. He also explained that short-term blackouts at some metro stations are due to overloads or damage to the equipment of the electrical networks that supply the metro.

"Therefore, locally at the stations, the lights sometimes disappear, but these are usually short-term moments for 1-2, maximum 5 minutes, until the station is transferred to the backup circuit and the lighting is turned on. There is nothing wrong with this, although it is unpleasant," said the specialist.

According to him, the electrical network to which the Kyiv Metro is connected is physically unable to ensure its operation in the required mode, if Russian drones and missiles damage the city's networks on the surface too much. The electricity backup system can support only minimal traffic in the event of network damage, and in conditions of critical shortage, the subway reduces work or closes completely.

The expert also explained that all problems with the operation of electric transport, which the capital faced after the enemy strikes, were connected with damage to the networks. As soon as the damage was eliminated, transport resumed traffic on full routes, despite the fact that the shortage of electricity in Ukraine continues.

According to Vyacheslav Skryl, traction substations in Kyiv are being revived as a priority and they should not be affected by deficits, however, if there is a critical lack of electricity, decisions can be made at the city level to reduce the operation of electric transport or stop it completely. "In most Ukrainian cities where there is electric transport, traction substations are now subject to shutdown schedules. This, in my opinion, is not normal.

There are clear problems at the network level, because according to current regulations traction substations should not be disconnected, but this, unfortunately, is happening in Cherkasy, Zhytomyr and many other cities. And this is under current conditions," the engineer noted. We will remind, on November 9, in the morning in Kharkiv, they could not start the subway due to a lack of voltage after the Russian attack.
