Germany does not want to limit gas prices from Russia - Politico

Berlin is concerned that Moscow will completely stop the supply of fuel to Europe, in particular, more dependent on it Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Because of this, the country will have to share their own stocks. The European Union is trying to set marginal prices for importing Russian gas, but is facing Germany obstacles.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Lien is promoting the plan, its goal is to deprive Russia of high profits and to control the price of gas, which is rapidly growing and sowing political and economic chaos on the continent. However, this idea is resisted by the most powerful economy of Europe and the historically largest importer of Russian gas in the EU. About it reports Politico.

"We are still skeptical of issues related to the restriction of gas prices, but in general we are ready for negotiations within European limits," said a representative of the German Ministry of Economy. According to journalists, one of the EU diplomats criticized Berlin and called it a problem, so it took a long time to resolve the issue of marginal gas prices from Russia.

Following the statements of Ursula von der Liaien, calling the prices for imports of Russian gas last week, EU officials prepare options for introducing such an event. They should be discussed on September 7 before the emergency meeting of energy ministers on September 9. France has become the last country that supported the Brussels Plan, Poland also wants to set a marginal price for gas, and that such an event is extended to all gas imports into Europe.

However, the German Chancellor's Government Olaf Scholtz resists. Berlin argues that the EU should focus on less provocative steps to combat high energy prices, namely, introducing a tax on energy profits. Germany is concerned that the introduction of marginal prices for importing Russian gas will lead to the fact that Moscow will completely stop the supply of fuel to Europe, in particular, more depending on it Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

German politicians claim that the country's indecision in this matter is not so much due to their own interests as because of the regional supply situation. Reducing gas supply from Russia will also force the country to share their reserves with other countries in accordance with EU rules, leaving less. However, journalists say that Russian supplies to the EU have fallen sharply. Previously, they accounted for 40% of imports, and now less than 10%.

"If they don't supply a lot, why don't you take a chance?" - note the EU Energy Administration. We will remind, on September 6 the media reported that the EU invented how to limit prices for Russian gas. In order to avoid supplies due to threats of Russian Federation, European countries can divide into zones depending on their needs for blue fuel. On September 2, the Russian Gazprom announced the stopping of the Nord Stream Pipeline.
