Photos published by the Ministry of Defense of Belarus show two types of protective superstructures: on one tank there is a classic "barbecue" above the tower, and on the other - a massive metal structure that completely covers the side projection and the top of the hull. A camouflage net is stretched over this structure, which hides the details of the protection.
As the analysts of "Military" noted, by analogy with Russian models, such protection can be made of lattice screens or sheet metal and is intended to reduce vulnerability from vertical attacks by drones dropping cumulative or fragmentation munitions. Such structures received the unofficial name "tank shed" in the army. The Russians began massively installing them on armored vehicles in late 2023 — early 2024, preparing for assaults on Ukrainian positions.
Metal frames and sheet screens were supposed to protect the tower and the engine-transmission compartment from the blows of kamikaze drones. However, in practice, "sheds" have not become reliable protection. Ukrainian FPV drone operators have adapted tactics by attacking weak areas and using multiple drone links to penetrate even fortified structures.
The experts also noted that recently the Russian units demonstrated a new modification of the protective systems, made of metal cables sticking out in different directions, which looks like a "hedgehog". This design is designed to physically damage the blades of drones and prevent the warhead from being activated. "However, at the same time, the mass of the combat vehicle increases significantly, its dimensions and the ease of operation deteriorates," the "Military" emphasized.
