Aviation with the UMPC: It became known how the Russians turned Fab-2550 into a managed ammunition

Experts noted that the AMPC ammunition differs from the Western JDAM-ER. The disadvantage of the Russian version is that its combat readiness is achieved only after launch, which increases the risk of an emergency situation. Photos of the Russian-controlled Fab-2550 bomb, which were used during the latest blows in Ukraine, appeared on the network. It turned out that these aviation ammunition, as well as Fab-500, are equipped with a unified planning and correction module (UMPC).

This indicates that Russian weapons did not use new technologies to modify the FAB-2550. This is stated in Defense Express. The observers noted that Russia did not use new technologies to modify FAB-250 in managed weapons. Instead, they simply installed the same UMPC modules that were previously integrated with Fab-500.

Experts have noted that there was still no reliable information about the specific method of processing Russian Fab-250 on the controlled variants since their widespread use by the occupiers in July this year. Meanwhile, it remains unknown at what distance the Russians use these aircraft, as well as what type of aircraft acts as a platform. For example, last year the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation was used under Avdiivka Fab-250 at a distance of 10 km from the front line.

Commenting on the photos, Western experts noted that unlike the American JDAM-ER, the Russian UMPC has a number of key drawbacks. First, the state of readiness of the combat calculation equipped with the UMPC module is achieved only after launch, not at the stage of preparation. This increases the risk of unforeseen complications, especially above Russia's airspace.

Another significant technical restriction of the Russian winged explosive device is directly related to the design of "cast iron" fasteners Fab-500m-62. Unlike JDAM-ER, they are made in the form of welded monoliths, which makes it impossible to dismantle the tail part to replace the control module. At the same time, the advantage of the UMPC is that ammunition with this module can be promptly translated from unmanaged regime to field -operated.
