Russia insists on its "peace" conditions: Donbas and no NATO in Ukraine, — Reuters

Share: Russia has sent an unofficial communique to the United States, in which it restated its previous conditions for reaching a peace agreement with Ukraine. Moscow insists on full control over Donbas and a guarantee of the absence of NATO forces on the territory of Ukraine. Russia's terms, outlined in the communiqué, effectively represent a rejection of US President Donald Trump's proposal to freeze the front lines in their current position.

This was reported by the Reuters news agency with reference to anonymous sources. According to one of the American officials, in addition to control over the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, the Russian side reiterated its demand that within the framework of any future agreement on the territory of Ukraine, the forces of the North Atlantic Alliance should not be stationed.

The news about the unofficial document, which conveys the position of one side to the other in the diplomatic environment, appeared against the background of statements about the preparation of the summit of Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Budapest. Now, taking into account the position of the Kremlin, the prospects of a meeting between the leaders of the United States and the Russian Federation look doubtful, the publication notes.

This was confirmed by one of the agency's sources — according to him, such a meeting is not planned in the near future. In this way, Russia adheres to its maximalist demands on Ukraine. At the same time, the White House, responding to the request of journalists, referred to Trump's statement made on Tuesday. The US president then said that he had not yet made a decision about the summit, but did not want a "useless meeting".

However, Trump added that a truce on the current front line remains possible. Preparations for the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Budapest continue, but the exact date of the summit has not yet been agreed upon. Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban announced this on October 22 on his Facebook page. "The preparations for the peace summit are ongoing. The date has not yet been determined. When the time comes, we will hold it.

We will show the world that Budapest was not chosen by chance. It happened because Hungary is an island of peace, and Hungarians are supporters of peace," the Hungarian leader wrote. It will be recalled that on October 16, US President Donald Trump reported on a "productive" telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin and announced a personal meeting, which, according to him, could take place within the next two weeks in the Hungarian capital.
