Share: Military bloggers have again recorded the use of the WWII-era M114 howitzer by the artillerymen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During the recent training firings of the unit of the ground troops of OK "Zahid", an example of a 155-mm gun was lit up, on the carriage of which even a plate with the old name Howitzer 155M was preserved. M. M1A1, dated 1944.

The presenters of the "Vodogray" channel reported on the use of rare artillery samples for the rear training of the personnel of the Armed Forces. However, the very next day, photos appeared where the M114A1 was attributed to the 152nd separate hunting brigade - these shots, according to the Tysk NIP community, were taken in the Pokrovsky direction, that is, on the front line.

Thus, judging by the available images, the ancient guns, which have a place in the museum, were used not only in training fire exercises, but also in a combat situation. The M114 howitzer is an outdated artillery system with a short range (about 14. 6 km) and a low rate of fire (about 2 rounds per minute). Due to age, questions remain about the technical condition of the guns, the availability of spare barrels and components.

In their comments on this issue, Defense Express columnists noted that such cases can be surprising. But analysts drew attention to the fact that the rare howitzer is in a closed position, where it is provided with camouflage and better protection. Regarding the question of where the Ukrainian fighters got such systems, the analysts noted that as early as 2022, Portugal delivered M114 batteries, and in 2024, Greece provided 70 units.

"The problems of the M114 do not end only with its characteristics, because due to its age, there are questions about the technical condition of the system and the availability of spare barrels. Perhaps in the future we will see some domestic development based on it, with a replacement of the barrel, or in general, like the Serbian 203-mm mortar," the experts concluded.
