Russian "Sevmash" is undergoing modernization: how will it affect the production of submarines

The enterprise, among other things, creates an infrastructure that is necessary for the implementation of the block-modular method of construction of atomic submarines. This will reduce the construction time of the APL by 18 months. The leading Russian manufacturer of submarines - "Sevmash" has announced the completion of the large -scale modernization of the galvanic shop responsible for applying a special coating on metal products.

According to Defense News, this project, completed this month, aimed at improving the energy efficiency of production at the plant, which plans to build a fifth generation atomic submarine for Russia. According to the company, Sevmashi Severodvinsky has put into operation new galvanic sites, including ultrasound purification, specialized chrome, solid and electrical insulation, as well as chemical nicketing.

According to expert from the Center for Analysis of European Policy in Washington Pavel Luzin, the construction cycle of construction and testing of new submarines is now about seven years. Currently, the plant is busy with the construction of eight to ten submarines at different stages. However, in his opinion, it is not clear whether Sevmash will be able to implement all plans in view of the restriction of access to Western technologies and equipment through sanctions.

"In the face of closing access to Western technologies and equipment, when the entire cooperative chain involved in the creation of submarines is suffering from sanctions, it is difficult to predict how effective the modernization of" Sevmash "will be, - said Luzin. Last major modernization of Sevmash production" It was conducted in the 1970s for the construction of atomic submarines of the third generation.

Since 2011, as part of the Federal Targeted Program for the Development new technological equipment in different countries, and after 2022 began to actively develop local production equipment. The modernization process covers not only technical aspects but also energy efficiency, as in the event of transition to natural gas use instead of oil and coal.

Yes, 2023 the company completed Modernization of the metallurgical shop, during which electric arc furnaces for the production of steel, equipment for non -flowing steel, gas purification stations for furnace emissions and cooling systems with closed water compliance were purchased. Also an important stage of modernization was the updating of crane equipment, which contributes to a more efficient production process.

Sevmash plans to continue participation in the federal target program by 2027 and use this opportunity to further modernize production in the construction of fifth generation submarines. Luzin added that "Russia is actively working on the creation of such submarines, taking into account the planned construction of boats" Bori "and" Ash "at least the early 2030s.

" Another important point in the technical re-equipment of the plant is the creation of the infrastructure necessary for the implementation of the block-modular method of construction of atomic submarines. This approach involves the preparation of submarine from large blocks filled with equipment. It will replace the modular-aggregate method existing on Sevmash, introduced during the construction of a third-generation atomic submarines.

In the new method, most of the assembly works are performed in specialized shops, after which the blocks are fed to the stand for the final assembly of the entire submarine. According to Russian experts, this approach will improve the quality of work, reduce the complexity and cost, as well as reduce the construction time of the APL by 18 months.

Meanwhile, this method requires increased accuracy of the entire technological process and a high production culture at all stages, and its introduction takes a long time. The Russians plan to complete the work in this direction by 2031. Thus, the completion of modernization of production at Sevmash not only increases the efficiency of production of submarines, but also confirms Russia to strengthen its defense capabilities in the maritime sphere.
