War in Space: How laser technologies will help defeat Russia and other aggressors

Ukraine has already demonstrated in the war against the Russian Federation, what advantages on Earth give the use of space data, collected and provided by various satellite systems. Space has expanded as an operational sphere for the military, and in modern conflicts it will play an increasingly important role.

This will push the development of technologies that can provide uninterrupted connection, intelligence and observation, as well as situational awareness of multi -dominant operations (MDO), writes Shepard Media. Lasers will be of great importance in modern military operations. They can track and determine the location of the objects on the battlefield, creating a reliable operational picture. Lasers will also improve MDO by integration of sensors, laser rangefinders and more.

Ben Green, founder and director of innovation Electro Optic Systems (EOS), believes that over the next 10 years, most of the military communication in the world will become optical and it will be based on lasers. The opposition of obstacles will also be based on lasers. In the conditions of growing cyber threats, it is important to protect communication channels. Lasers can build a communication system, the data of which is not realistically intercept.

Green emphasizes: "Broadband communication systems for national security will be based on optical technologies, and many of them are already. " Lasers also play a crucial role in the dazzling and disruption of sensors and intelligence satellites, which does not allow opponents to gain strategic advantage.

Juliana Zuss, a researcher at the Royal Institute of Joint Services (Rusi), believes that for space military forces are important: the importance of space sensors and systems was vividly demonstrated in February 2022, when Ukraine was able to track the actions of the Army of Russia. Theodora Ogden, space policy analytics in Rand, said that Ukraine continues to use high -resolution images from satellites, as well as radars with synthesized aperture, PNT and Satcom, such as Starlink.

In her opinion, the Russian Federation seeks to gain a strategic advantage by raising situational awareness through satellite data. However, Ukrainian land surveillance opportunities using ISR ignore Russia's attempts to control the information environment. Awareness of the space sphere involves monitoring and understanding of the environment in space to ensure freedom of action.

High -precision sensors provide unsurpassed accuracy of positioning of objects in different orbital modes - from low Earth orbit to geostationary orbit. This accurate tracking provides the best space exploration and control. The ability to track small, dull and distant objects is also important. This can provide satellite laser location (SLR). Technology measures the movement of satellites to an accuracy of a millimeter, which is crucial for determining their orbits.
