The US Geological Service recorded magnitude raising from 8. 0 to 8. 8. The city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was most affected, where four-meter waves caused significant damage. The earthquake has been called the most powerful in the region since 1952 - it has become the sixth in history. The last Japan survived a similar catastrophe in 2011: then tsunami destroyed Fukushima infrastructure and caused a nuclear accident.
