Our visit-one of the several delegations of Congress on the island-does not contradict the ancient "policy of one China", based on the law on Taiwan in 1979, joint American-Chinese communique and six assurances. The United States continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo. Our visit is part of our wider trip to the Pacific, including visiting Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan, and focused on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic management.

Discussions with our Taiwanese partners will be devoted to confirming our island's support and promoting our common interests, including the promotion of free and open Indo-Pacific. America's solidarity with Taiwan is more important than ever - not only for 23 million inhabitants of the island, but also for millions of other people who are depressed and are threatened by the PRC.
