They flew from Kaliningrad: Russian planes flew over Lithuania

Share: Russian warplanes violated Lithuanian airspace in the evening of October 23, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said. The flight took 18 seconds, but during this time the Spanish fighters took off. The Ministry of Defense of Lithuania reported that a Russian Su-30 fighter jet and an Il-78 refueling plane crossed the border from the Kaliningrad region, invading Lithuanian airspace near the city of Kibartai.

The planes flew about 700 meters over the territory of Lithuania and after 18 seconds returned to the territory of Russia. In response to this, two Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon fighters from the NATO mission to patrol the airspace of the Baltic countries were immediately launched into the air. They are still on patrol. It is possible that the incident could have happened during air refueling exercises.

The country's president Gitanas Nauseda condemned this incident as a serious violation of international law and Lithuania's sovereignty. "This confirms the importance of strengthening the readiness of European air defense," he said. The president added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania plans to summon employees of the Russian embassy to officially protest against the "reckless and dangerous behavior" of the Russian army.

In recent weeks, Russian military aircraft have repeatedly violated the airspace of NATO countries. In September, Russian drones entered Polish airspace, and Russian fighter jets entered Estonian airspace. It will be recalled that in September the airspace of Poland was violated by Russian drones, one of which was found in the village of Mnyszków, Lodz Voivodeship. The drone probably covered about 1,500 km. Meanwhile, the EU announced the 19th package of sanctions against Russia.
