Cheap rockets for Leopard and Challenger: MBDA is working on a new Akeron MBT 120 ammunition

Extend: The largest European MBDA missile manufacturer at the DSEI UK has introduced the development of a new Akeron MBT 120 missile designed for a 120-mm tank gun installation. It allows you to hit the goals behind the shelters without the need for direct visibility. Akeron MBT 120 ammunition can be used as a conventional projectile, which significantly increases the capabilities of Leopard 2, Challenger 3 and other 120 mm gun machines.

This is written by Defense News in the material of September 9. The rocket is equipped with a passive electronic optical/infrared seeker and works on the principle of "shot and forgot. " The system provides attack from above, with lesions of the least protected areas of enemy armored vehicles. MBDA engineers emphasize that the solution takes into account the experience of war in Ukraine, where most tank battles are up to 1500 meters away, and often use a blind man.

"These new ammunition will allow (tanks) to fight in a completely different way-to increase their combat efficiency, to increase survival, to limit the dependence on extraneous systems, such as artillery, and to dominate the melee in the fact that we consider the war of the new generation to use the same weapon. Specifications of Akeron MBT 120: European developers plan to test Akeron MBT 120 in the fourth quarter of 2025, and Crossbow production production can begin as early as 2026.

The company is actively developing a network of suppliers in Europe, which will allow you to establish large -scale production and ensure independence from external chains. With regard to the cost of development, it will depend on the final specifications that will be clarified by customers. However, MBDA positions the rocket as a "cost -effective circle solution".

It is noted that the rocket engine will start a ammunition from a barrel with low overload, after which it will be split to supersonic speed. This will avoid the need to use expensive components that are resistant to high overloads. Recall that at the end of May, the European concern MBDA declared successful tests of a new anti -tank missile Akeron LP. This weapons system is designed to defeat a wide range of targets, including armored vehicles, positions and valuable enemy infrastructure.
