In Kharkiv, due to the attack of the Russian Federation, the Nuclear Installation "Source of Neutron" is deactivated: Details

The reason for the stop is Russian shelling. According to preliminary data, there are emergency diesel generators on the site. On the morning of April 4, Russian shelling caused the nuclear subcritical installation "Source of Neutron" in Kharkiv. External power supply was lost at 8:30. This was reported by the press service of the State Inspectorate of Nuclear Regulation (Diara).

The inspection was received by the National Scientific Center "Kharkiv Physical and Technical Institute", which contains the installation "Source of Neutron". The emergency energy system worked in the regular mode. Emergency diesel generators are included in the work. Radiation situation at the site within the normal range. "The source of neutrons based on a subcritical assembly, led by a linear electron accelerator") is the world's only nuclear subcritical installation.

The "source of neutrons" is intended for conducting scientific and applied research in the field of nuclear physics, radiation materials, biology, chemistry, as well as for the production of medical radioisotopes. The creation of this nuclear subcritical installation has become possible with the financial support of the United States as compensation for export from the territory of Ukraine to the Russian Federation of Highly enriched nuclear materials.

Prior to the commencement of a full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation into the territory of Ukraine, the nuclear plant was at the stage of physical start, the active area was loaded with fresh nuclear fuel. On February 24, operational staff transferred the installation to a deep subcritical condition. Since then, the Russian troops have fired at the "source of neutrons" several times. On March 28, 2022, a serious radiation threat warned Diara.
