According to CNN, the vote took place between 20:30 and 21:00 Washington time on Sunday, November 9 (or November 10, 3:30 - 4:00 Kyiv time). Under the agreement, government funding will continue until January 30. Voting on the bill on affordable health care and food stamp funding is also scheduled for 2026.
As The Washington Post later reported, after bipartisan negotiators reached an agreement during the vote, seven Democratic senators voted with nearly all House Republicans to take the first step toward reopening the government. "Sunday's vote, which required 60 votes to pass, is the first of many that will be needed to pass the deal in the upper house," the publication noted. The deal includes, among other things, the reversal of President Trump's decisions to lay off federal employees.
In addition, it contains a provision that prevents similar precedents in the future. Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he and other House Democrats "will fight" against the bipartisan deal. The official announced this a few hours before the vote, justifying the "protest" by the fact that the legislation proposed by the Republicans "will not extend tax benefits under the Affordable Care Act.
" The breakthrough came after weeks of closed-door talks, including between a bipartisan group of senators, the media reported. It is worth noting that the approved package will still have to go through the approval process in the House of Representatives before it gets signed by US President Donald Trump. This process may take several days. Trump himself announced before the vote that the shutdown was likely nearing completion.
