"Afraid" of direct dialogue: a US official explained why Putin avoids meeting with Zelensky

Spread: Rumors once again spread in the media that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the head of the Kremlin Volodymyr Putin may meet. The Ukrainian leader has expressed readiness for such a meeting even earlier, but Putin is in no hurry: he is probably "afraid" of a direct dialogue with him for a number of reasons. Vladimir Putin avoids a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, as he is well aware that he will not be able to win a debate with him.

Such an opinion was expressed by David Tafuri, a foreign policy expert and former US State Department official, in a commentary for Kanal 24. According to him, the head of the Kremlin would be in an awkward position at such a meeting. First of all, because he does not have such "charisma and sincerity" as the Ukrainian leader. In addition, another reason that Putin avoids Zelensky is that he is not serious about the ceasefire issue.

The Kremlin leader has still not changed his intentions regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war and plans to continue the battle. "These conditions are unacceptable for Ukraine. It should be so, because Putin wants not only the already captured eastern regions, but also those that Ukrainian forces are successfully defending," said David Tafuri. He also added that Putin prefers to speak directly with US President Donald Trump.

"All because there are no other people around them who would push Ukraine to influence the US leader," the expert explained. Tafuri also added that until Putin begins to make real concessions on ending the war, there is no point in hoping that a trilateral meeting between the leaders of the United States, Ukraine and Russia could be successful. It is worth noting that Vladimir Putin announced in September that Volodymyr Zelensky would come to Moscow.
