Military police will appear in Ukraine: inspections, checkpoints, weapons, all about the new standard of the Ministry of Defense

Share: The Main Directorate of the Military Law and Order Service of the Armed Forces has developed a project of the professional standard "Military Policeman". The document defines the duties, rights and requirements for the training of military policemen who will act during martial law and international missions. The project of the professional standard "Military Policeman" (3013) was prepared by the Main Directorate of the Military Service of Law and Order of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The document stipulates that military police officers will maintain law and order among military personnel, monitor discipline, conduct inspections, detentions and patrols, as well as guard facilities during martial law. According to the project, military police officers have the right to check identity documents, seize dangerous objects and physical evidence, as well as draw up reports on administrative offenses.

They are allowed to detain both military and civilians, ensuring that the law and rights of detainees are respected. The standard defines clear limits on the use of force, special means and weapons. Police officers are obliged to warn violators before using physical influence or firearms, to act within the limits of the instructions and to bear personal responsibility for the consequences.

In addition, every military police officer must have first aid skills, including stopping bleeding, restoring breathing, and performing CPR after the use of force or a weapon. During martial law, military police officers will man checkpoints, check vehicles, documents, baggage, monitor curfew enforcement and coordinate with the National Police.

They can also be involved in international peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, where they must comply with the norms of international humanitarian law and speak English at the level defined by the STANAG 6001 standard. The project provides that military police officers will undergo professional training and advanced training courses. Levels 2 and 3 of the National Qualifications Framework are set for basic sergeants, and level 4 for technicians.

Applicants must be medically fit, have basic military training, no criminal record and a positive psychological fitness report. We will remind you that in June 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted in the first reading the draft law on the creation of the military police, which should replace the Military Law and Order Service. The new professional standard will become a normative basis for the formation and training of future military policemen.
