Polish air defense in the Ukrainian sky: Warsaw to beat Russian missiles

Warsaw studies the opportunity to use its air defense to protect the Ukrainian sky. But there is no final decision yet. The focus has found out what risks and consequences could be in such a step. Warsaw considers the ability to use their own air defense systems to knock Russian missiles over Ukraine. However, there are no decisions on this issue. This was stated by a spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry Pavel Vronsky.

"This issue is considered from a legal and technical point of view, but there are no decisions in this case," he said. Vronsky noted that the Ukrainian side appealed to Poland with such an initiative. Warsaw studies issues with international law experts and technical experts to weigh all the risks and evaluate the consequences of such a step. Experts will have to agree on the conditions under which Polish air defense can be used to defeat goals over Ukraine.

At the same time, the Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that Poland does not consider the ability to transfer its systems to Ukraine. Vronsky added that the issue was updated after March 24, when a Russian rocket flew into Poland for 39 seconds. The Foreign Ministry called the Russian ambassador Sergei Andreev to discuss the incident. However, he rejected the invitation.

According to the Ukrainian diplomat, the expert of the Center for Defense Strategies Alexander Har, there are no legal obstacles to the involvement of Polish air defense systems against Russian missiles over Ukraine in Poland. However, Warsaw will have to focus on Washington's decision on this issue.

"Since Poland is a member of NATO, and the administration of Joe Baiden from the beginning of a full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine has approved a strategic framework according to which the Alliance will not be part of the war, this issue is a political and legal component.

Warsaw could help us to knock down missiles - and no No international agreement or precedent that shows that such actions can be regarded as an attack or a manifestation of aggression against the country that has launched a newly known case - when the US and allies used their air defense to protect Israel again that no one is considering such Actions as the introduction of other countries to the war.

At the beginning of a full -scale invasion, the Ukrainian authorities repeatedly appealed to the leaders of the Western countries to close the sky over Ukraine. However, the West claimed that such decisions could be drawn to the Alliance in the war against the Russian Federation. However, the topic of protection of the Ukrainian sky became re -relevant, after the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Jordan repelled Iranian attack against Israel in April 2024.

Then President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Israel is not a member of NATO, and therefore does not fall under the protection of Article 5 of the Alliance. However, the allies were able to repel the attack of Iran, with none of them being involved in the war. "The sky of Europe could have long been obtained exactly if Ukraine had the same full support of partners in the prints of drones and rockets.

Terror should lose everywhere and completely, not somewhere more, and somewhere less," - President spoke. Political scientist Igor Reityrovich believes that Moscow will in any case threaten the escalation of the event, including nuclear, whatever decisions there.

However, in the case of Poland, if Warsaw agrees to defend the Ukrainian sky, the air defense systems will knock down missiles over the territory of Ukraine, and therefore these actions can not be regarded as an attack on the Russian Federation. "Escalation is when the NATO military comes to Ukraine and fight against the Russian Federation. Everything else is not escalation.

But it is certainly a difficult decision for the international community, there are risks, part of society will not agree with such actions, fearing a military threat. It is active, already well, " - Reitrovich says in a conversation with focus. Experts believe that Polish air defense could knock Russian missiles over the Lviv region, through which Western weapons were supplied to Ukraine.

In addition, Poland's decisions could push other EU countries that borders Ukraine to use its air defense to protect the sky near the borders. "Therefore, Poland could help Ukraine protect part of the sky. And it would be important for us to be collective. Then Romania could also help Ukraine protect the south. And with it Bulgaria and other countries. The territory can reveal such an umbrella, " - says Hara.

Technically, Polish air defense systems, according to Har, could knock down missiles over the western regions of Ukraine. And that would allow Kiev to use Western air defense systems in other cities. "We have a large area and protect it is a very difficult task. Millions of US air defense and missiles cost. And this is still a big problem for our partners," Hara summarizes.
