$ 300 billion in favor of Ukraine: the United States offers G7 countries to confiscate assets of the Russian Federation - FT

According to representatives of some G7 countries, the confiscation of assets will be insufficient to close Ukraine's needs for reconstruction, so this plan cannot replace Kiev's financial support in 2024. The United States is offering G7 countries to confiscate $ 300 billion of frozen Russian assets. Financial Time writes about it.

According to the newspaper, the Allies are in a hurry to reconcile this plan by the second anniversary of the full -scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, but FT emphasizes that no decisions are not made at the moment, and everything is under discussion, in particular in Europe. According to the sources of the publication, the topic of confiscation of assets was discussed by G7 finance ministers and their deputies, who met in December.

With regard to the topic of discussions, FT notes that they were primarily concerned with the mechanism of confiscation and risk assessment. "The United States, with the support of the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada, proposed to continue their preparatory work to be ready for February 24," the publication said.

Officially, the United States has not yet supported the seizure of Russia's assets, but according to the publication, the document was extended among G7 stating that it would be legitimate and as a "counter -confidence, to encourage Russia to stop its aggression. " In addition, Washington proposed three working groups that will study the legal aspects of confiscation, ways to reduce risks and ways of using these assets in favor of Ukraine.

However, some European countries, such as Germany, France, Italy, have expressed some reservations and the need to carefully evaluate the legitimacy of asset confiscation. In addition, as FT points out, several European ministers have called for confidentiality to maintain the whole process. The EU also believes that the assets will be insufficient to close Ukraine's needs for reconstruction, and that this plan should not replace Kiev's financial support in 2024.

Earlier, in September 2023, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated that Ukraine would be transferred to Ukraine for the first time by Russian sub -pod -Russian oligarchs. It was the first step of the United States on the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. In addition, the recently published The New York Times said the United States was urgently discussing with partners in the use of frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine.

We will remind, on December 27, the Baiden administration announced a new package of military assistance for Ukraine. It includes weapons of $ 250 million, which is necessary to meet the needs of defense and security in the war against Russia. In addition, on December 27, Focus reported that US Presidential Administration Joe Baiden and European officials shift the focus to support the purpose of Ukraine - a complete victory over the Russian Federation - to improve Kyiv's position in peace talks.
